Task:
Using a suitable map, draw the route of the 2016 Rio Olympic Torch relay and complete the following information; total number of torchbearers, total distanace travelled, number of days for the relay, number of cities visited and write the results in numerical order from smallest to largest and write each of the numbers in words. Then add all of these number together (showing your working out) and write the answer in both numbers and words. Following, calculate the average distance travelled each day and work out what is this as a percentage of the total distance and write this as a decimal also. (Show all working out). Lastly, write the total distance travelled in both km and m and calculate the average distance each torchbearer went with the torch (show all working out).
Method:
Firtsly, I drew a map of the 2016 Rio Olympic Torch Relay Map.
Then, using the 3 links provided, I visited the websites and studied the information supplied and answered the information required.
1. Number of torchbearers: 12,000
2. Total distance travelled: 20,000
3. Number of cities visited: 300
4. Number of days of the relay: 95
Then I wrote out the results
1. Number of torchbearers: 12,000
2. Total distance travelled: 20,000
3. Number of cities visited: 300
4. Number of days of the relay: 95
Then I wrote out the results
Next, I ordered the number in numerical order from smallest to largest.
Following, I wrote the results in words.
Sequentially, I added the results together.
I concluded that all the results added together totals 32,395.
Following, I started to figure out the average person total distance travelled each day. I divided the total distance travelled by the number of days of the relay to result in the answer.
Following, I started to figure out the average person total distance travelled each day. I divided the total distance travelled by the number of days of the relay to result in the answer.
I concluded that the average distance travelled each day was 210.52631579km.
Then, I began to work out the average distance travelled each day as a percentage of the total distance travelled. To calculate the answer, I divided the low number by high number and then multipled the result by 100 as a percentage is out of 100.
I concluded that the average distance travelled each day as a percentage of the total distance travelled is 1.05263158%.
Next, I began to convert the total distance travelled from km to m. Using my knowledge of metric conversion received from maths pathways, I was able to easily calculate the answer. I multiplied 20,000km by 1000 because there is 1000 metres in 1km.
I concluded that the total distance travelled in metres is 20,000,000 metres.
Lastly, I worked out the total average distance travelled by each torchbearer. To calculate the result, I divided the total distance travelled by the number of torchbearers.
I concluded that the average total distance travelled by each torchbearer is 1.6666667 km.
